Szela
The text of the song "Szela" is a fragment of the three-part poem "Słowo o Jakubie Szeli" by Brunon Jasieński, published in 1926 in Paris. It tells the story of Jakub Szela, a peasant insurgent. His often vicious and bloody actions were aimed at the manor and serf system in the Polish lands, in Western Galicia. The attitudes of the leftist poet Brunon Jasieński and the peasant rebel Jakub Szela were ambiguous and complicated. We are singing this text not as a tribute to them, but to draw attention to historical social injustice.
